The chairman of the Swiss National Bank (SNB) made the announcement on Monday at a conference in Zurich that the bank intends to launch a pilot project by issuing a wholesale central bank digital currency (CBDC) on Switzerland’s SIX digital exchange.
A wholesale CBDC is one intended for use in interbank transactions by financial institutions. A retail CBDC, on the other hand, is intended for use by the general public.
A “Real Money Equivalent,” Says SNB Chief
“This isn’t simply a trial, it will be genuine cash identical to bank saves and the goal is to test genuine exchanges with market members,” Reuters cited the bank’s director, Thomas Jordan, expressing at the Point Zero Discussion.
The central banker, on the other hand, did not rule out canning the project in the future. Although we cannot rule out the possibility of never introducing retail CBDCs, he stated, “We are a little bit prudent at the moment.”
