Mira Murati, chief technology officer of OpenAI, appears to have been hacked and used maliciously on Twitter.

On June 1, Mira Murati’s Twitter channel highlighted what had all the earmarks of being a new crypto token from the man-made reasoning (simulated intelligence) firm.

OPENAI was described as “a groundbreaking token driven by artificial intelligence-based language models” in the tweet that has since been removed.

OpenAI Social Media Compromised

“To see if you are eligible for an airdrop directly to your ETH address,” it continued, directing individuals to a shady website.

At the time of writing, the website was not accessible, suggesting that it may have been taken down.

Right now, AI-related topics are all the rage. Therefore, it is not surprising that con artists have taken advantage of it. Scams and spam continue to thrive on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter.

Social media platforms are doing very little to prevent phishing attacks, which have increased significantly in recent years. Scammers who want to advertise on Facebook are even able to pay through the platform.

Experts raised the concern that more sophisticated phishing emails are being sent using AI platforms like ChatGPT.

Scams involving AI investments are on the rise, according to the California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation (DFPI).

“The DFPI has recently noticed an increase in investment scams that claim to use AI to make money for investors.”

In addition, this kind of investment fraud asserts that their AI can trade crypto on investors’ behalf and generate profits that are too good to be true.

AI can also be used by bad actors to clone voices or create people who don’t exist for phone scams.

According to Jeff Greene, Aspen Digital’s senior director for cybersecurity, AI, phishing, and other forms of attack emails “will begin to come with much better grammar, tailoring to an individual’s interests.”

Crypto Phishing Rising

This year, there have been a number of crypto-related phishing attacks. Scammers promoted a phony token by taking over Robinhood’s social media accounts in January.

In addition, phishing attacks targeted the Moonbirds NFT collection’s creator’s wallet.

After gaining access to an employee’s computer in March, hackers sent phishing emails to The Sandbox metaverse users.

Due to an attack on email servers, MetaMask users have also received suspicious emails requesting KYC information.

If fraudsters are able to use AI platforms like ChatGPT as weapons, the phishing wave will only get more sophisticated.
